Mr Karl Hampton appointed to AIATSIS Council

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) welcomes the appointment of Mr Karl Hampton to the AIATSIS Council for a four-year term. Mr Hampton’s appointment by Senator the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy, Minister for Indigenous Australians, reflects the Institute's commitment to ensuring strong leadership for the preservation, promotion, and celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Mr Hampton brings a wealth of experience to the Council as well as a deep connection to community. A proud Warlpiri man from the Northern Territory, Mr Hampton is a well-respected leader, researcher and community historian who has dedicated his career to advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s rights. His leadership in the public sector and his commitment to fostering community empowerment make him an invaluable addition to the AIATSIS Council.

Mr Hampton has held key roles in the Northern Territory Government, including as Minister for Regional Development, Housing, and Local Government. He is Co-Founder of the Warlpiri Project and the current Director of Indigenous Strategy at the Central Desert Regional Council. He is also a member of the Aboriginal Advisory Board for the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. His extensive experience supports the Institute’s work in promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, languages and stories.

The AIATSIS Council plays a vital role in steering the Institute’s strategic vision. Mr Hampton’s leadership and wealth of experience will support AIATSIS to remain at the forefront of championing and safeguarding First Nations histories, cultures and rights, both nationally and internationally.
