A new collection of essays, Long History Deep Time, edited by AIATSIS Researcher Dr Mary Anne Jebb and AIATSIS Member Professor Anne McGrath was launched Monday 21 September 2015.

Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt officially launched the book at a special event at the Australian National University in Canberra. It contains chapters by Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) Members and associates including Dr Luke Taylor and Dr Jeanine Leane.

Dr Jebb said Long History Deep Time pushes Australian history beyond 1788 exploring notions of time across cultures and disciplines and is a product of a large Australian Research Council Linkage Project.

“The project is called Deepening Histories of Place - Exploring Indigenous Landscapes of National and international Significance,” Dr Jebb said.

“AIATSIS partnered with the Australian National University, Sydney University, Parks Australia, NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, National Film and Sound Archive and Ronin Films on it.

“We used film, sound and text recordings to investigate the social and environmental links that create historical ‘highways’ of understanding of landscapes in the Blue Mountains and Central Australia.

“A range of multi-media productions are available on the project website including a set of research protocols created with internationally renowned Indigenous Intellectual Property expert Terry Janke, building on AIATSIS’ Guidelines for Ethical Research in Australian Indigenous Studies.”
