Leadership, Legacy and Opportunity

Indigenous lawyer and founder of the Cape York Partnerships, Noel Pearson, will present the keynote address at the 2015 National Native Title Conference, highlighting reforms for Indigenous social, political, economic and cultural development.

Co-convened by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and the Cape York Land Council, and hosted by the Kuku Yalanji people, this year’s Conference in Port Douglas from 16 - 18 June has attracted 150 speakers delivering over 70 papers and presentations.

The annual Mabo Lecture will be presented by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Mick Gooda. A special screening of Mabo, the film, for conference delegates will be introduced by daughter of the late Eddie ‘Koiki’ Mabo, Gail Mabo, and AIATSIS Council member and director of the film, Rachel Perkins.

A youth forum based on this year’s theme Leadership, Legacy and Opportunity will offer young people the chance to share their experiences of youth, leadership and native title. There will also be a special focus on current policy issues with emphasis on the COAG investigation into Indigenous land administration and use and a presentation from the ‘Expert Indigenous Working Group’ chaired by Wayne Bergmann.

The conference includes an extensive cultural program featuring dancers drawn from across Cape York, and tours with traditional owners to Mossman Gorge and Cooya beach.

The 2015 principal sponsors are the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Indigenous Land Corporation and the National Australia Bank.
