Expressions of Interest are now open for the 2024 Paper and Talk workshop!

In partnership with Living Languages, we are pleased to announce that we are running another Paper and Talk workshop in October 2024!

AIATSIS and Living Languages invite interested Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people to submit an Expression of Interest to participate in the 2024 Paper and Talk Workshop, to be held at AIATSIS in Canberra. Applications should be from groups of 2–3 people who want to work on their language.

The workshop offers training and one-on-one support to locate, understand, interpret, and use language materials in efforts to revitalise language. It also allows communities to access and recover language materials from the AIATSIS collection and other collecting institutions.

The workshop is an opportunity for Mob to come together, not only to work on language but also to connect in a culturally safe, collaborative environment. Previous participants have described how the Paper and Talk workshop broadens their understanding of both language and community:

“To be able to even just voice a small sentence introducing myself in my native tongue was so emotional for me, and to then be able to start to understand how to then teach that as well, to my kids, my son, my nephews and nieces, it just warms my heart.”

- Marie Dennis, Birri Gubba woman

If you are actively involved in language revitalisation efforts and can think of one or two other people who might like to participate in the workshop with you, submit your Expression of Interest today!

Expressions of Interest close on Wednesday 6 March 2024 at midnight.

Paper and Talk 2023

The 2024 Paper and Talk workshop will be held from 14 to 25 October at Maraga, AIATSIS in Canberra. Participation is free, with all training, materials, accommodation, transport, and workshop meals covered.
