ACT NAIDOC celebrations kick off with free festival

Singer-songwriter Troy Brady will perform at NAIDOC on the Peninsula.

Australia’s Got Talent finalist, ten-year-old Dean Brady and his singer-songwriter father Troy Brady will headline at this year’s NAIDOC on the Peninsula event in Canberra, Sunday 6 July.

The free family-friendly event hosted by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culture and achievements. This year it is also AIATSIS’ chance to celebrate its 50th birthday with the Canberra community.

Held on Acton Peninsula, the day is open to all Canberrans with a host of live performances and free children’s activities including rides and face-painting.

AIATSIS Principal, Russell Taylor said NAIDOC on the Peninsula is a great way to kick off NAIDOC Week and to showcase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to the wider Canberra community.

“As the national keeping place of Australia’s Indigenous cultural heritage we are proud to host the largest NAIDOC event in the territory,” Mr Taylor said.

“The family friendly atmosphere and free activities mean the day is always well attended. This year we encourage everyone to come down and celebrate NAIDOC and AIATSIS’ 50th anniversary with us.”

Local Indigenous arts and crafts outlets, local and federal government services and community organisations will hold stalls on the day. Torres Strait Islander and a number of other food and drink outlets will also operate.

Musical Indigenous performers include hip-hop trio The Last Kinection, Torres Strait Islander guitar virtuoso Chris Tamwoy and celebrated singer song-writer Troy Brady with his ten-year-old son Dean.

Local radio station 666 ABC Canberra, hosted by Lish Fejer will broadcast live on the Peninsula from 10am.

NAIDOC Week runs from 6-13 July 2104.
