A tribute to Galarrwuy Yunupingu
Galarrwuy Yunupingu AM has led the struggle for Aboriginal land rights in the Northern Territory for all his adult life. As a young man he helped draw up the Bark Petitions at Yirrkala, and acted as an interpreter during the Gove land rights case against the mining company Nabalco and the Commonwealth Government in the early 1970s.
He was chairman of the Northern Land Council for more than 20 years before he stepped down in October 2004.
Two former Directors (chief executives) of the NLC, Jack Ah Kit and his successor Mick Dodson, join a tribute to Mr Yunupingu’s service.
