This Act is designed to create better alignment between the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 (Qld) and its purpose of conserving Queensland’s cultural heritage. This Amendment Act emphasises that the Queensland Heritage Register is the chief instrument for the process of identifying and protecting places of heritage value. The Act provides more flexibility to make minor changes to the Queensland heritage register as well as clarifying what is required to removed a place from the heritage register. Lastly, the Act provides greater powers to local governments to identify and establish appropriate protections for places of local heritage significance.
This Act does not specifically relate to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage; the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (Qld) exists for that purpose.
