Dr Gawirrin Gumana AO (1935–2016)
Dr Gawirrin Gumana AO was a leader of the Yolŋu Dhalwangu clan, renowned for his artwork and knowledge of traditional culture and law.
Dr Gumana was a contributor to the famous Yirrkala church panels that led to presentation of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions to the House of Representatives in 1963.
Following the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976, Dr Gumana led his clan back to its traditional country at Gangan, about 150 kilometres southwest of Nhulunbuy.
Dr Gumana was a major litigant in the 2005 Federal Court Blue Mud Bay decision that granted inter-tidal rights on the Eastern coast of Arnhem land to traditional owners.
