Expression of interest – Paper and Talk 2023

What are the steps to submit an expression of interest?

If you want to be a part of the 2023 Paper and Talk workshop, you will need to:

  1. Read 'Who can put in an expression of interest?' below.
  2. Complete the expression of interest registration form by midnight 19 March 2023.
  3. The AIATSIS access and collection teams will check to make sure there are relevant materials in the collection to retrieve for your group to work with.
  4. If there are relevant materials in the AIATSIS Collection for your language AND you meet the eligibility and priority requirements (see below) then we will invite you to submit an application.
  5. Applications will be in two parts:
    1. A group application
    2. And each member of your group will need to submit an individual application to show why they want to come. This can be done over the phone if they aren’t comfortable writing.

Who can put in an expression of interest?

  • Expressions of interest are open to groups of two to three Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from the same language group who will work together throughout the workshop. All individuals must be recognised members of that language group.
  • At least one member of your group must have been involved in language work: e.g., researching, learning, or teaching/creating resources for your language.

A key part of Paper and Talk is the return of language materials from the AIATSIS Collection to First Nations peoples. Therefore, you will only be invited to attend if:

  1. There are materials containing your language in the AIATSIS archives that you and members of your group have not already accessed, and they are suitable for language revitalisation work (AIATSIS will help assess this).
  2. Your group is able to gain permission to access those materials (some materials are restricted to members of the language group, or even members of a particular family). You may need to provide evidence from community members/organisations that support your access. AIATSIS staff will be able to let you know what you need to access any materials.
  • Please note: Anyone is welcome to submit an expression of interest, but language groups with less work undertaken on them due to a lack of accessible materials will be prioritised. Once we have received all expressions of interest, we will let you know the likelihood of your language group being invited, to make sure your time isn’t wasted applying.
