Australian Aboriginal Studies Issue 2, 2017
The feature article in our latest edition of Australian Aboriginal Studies, ‘Access to sustainable employment and productive training: workplace participation strategies for Indigenous employees’, reports on an investigation into employment and workplace participation strategies for Indigenous employees in a Government organisation in Queensland.
The investigation by Queensland University of Technology found that policies introduced to promote Indigenous employment in Australia, such as Community Development Employment Projects (CDEPs), have had minimal impact on long-term employment outcomes and the percentage of Indigenous people in employment has barely moved in 35 years. The findings also indicated that employees wanted a career and not just a job and that they enjoyed working in a culturally safe environment with other Indigenous employees on site while also wanting to improve their life opportunities.
