Warlpiri Art Market Success

Janganpa Jukurrpa (Brush-tailed Possum Dreaming) - Mungapunju by Janelle Napurrurla Wilson

The recent Warlpiri Art Market held at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) was a huge success with the two art centres returning to the Northern Territory with just a handful of items unsold.

Over 300 hungry art enthusiasts embraced the Warnayaka Art and Cultural Aboriginal Corporation (artists of Lajamanu) and the Warlukurlangu (artists of Yuendumu), snapping up over 220 artworks in less than two days.

The managers of both centres said the enthusiasm from the public was outstanding and that they are keen to come back in the future.

Three pieces made their way into the AIATSIS art and artefact collection. Collections Director, Lyndall Osborne said the Institute was very pleased to add these stunning pieces to those already held by AIATSIS.

“With all sale proceeds going directly back to the community art centres and artists, we were very happy to not only be able to add to our collection, but also to support remote communities,” Ms Osborne said.

The artworks, Janganpa Jukurrpa (Brush-tailed Possum Dreaming) - Mungapunju by Janelle Napurrurla Wilson, Malikijarra Jukurrpa (Two Dogs Dreaming) by Murdie Nampijinpa Morris, and Women’s Dreaming by Biddy Napanangka Timms will join the 1000 item strong collection of original pieces held by AIATSIS.
