It is with great sadness that AIATSIS learned of the passing of Russ Taylor last night, and we offer our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.
A proud Kamilaroi man, Russ, was a tireless campaigner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for over four decades, born and raised in Millers Point, NSW, with family connections to La Perouse in Sydney and the Traditional New England Country.
Russ leaves a powerful legacy of over 20 years in senior public services roles, including positions in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, the Aboriginal Development Commission and two stints as CEO at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). In 2015, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his significant service to the community as a cultural leader and public sector executive in Indigenous affairs.
Russ was a passionate advocate and campaigner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to lead, drive and be involved in every change process. As one of the most senior Indigenous Commonwealth servants for many years, he was a trailblazer leader for a whole generation of Indigenous leaders, mentoring many and inspiring more.
Russ achieved much in his life: his strength of character, resilience, immense generosity, and contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia is a shining example of a life commitment and purpose. AIATSIS is fortunate to be one of many benefactors of his remarkable legacy.
Today is a day for mourning and remembering as we pay tribute and celebrate a life that was well lived—so much heartache across Community. AIATSIS is a place of stories - the story of this man's contribution to AIATSIS will never be forgotten.
May he be greeted by his Ancestors on his return home.
Vale Russ Taylor.
