To celebrate this year’s National Reconciliation Week (NRW), Australia’s national cultural institutions and Reconciliation Australia have prepared a week-long program of events in Canberra including public activities, exhibitions, displays, lectures, tours, films and stories – known collectively as the NRW Trail.
National Reconciliation Week this year commemorates two major milestones in the Nation’s history – the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum on 27 May, and the 25th anniversary of the High Court of Australia's Mabo decision on 3 June.
Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) CEO Craig Ritchie said the special anniversary dates deserved a coordinated effort to highlight the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to the nation.
“The significant anniversaries made it an ideal time to collaborate with our partner institutions to ensure a memorable National Reconciliation Week,” Mr Ritchie said.
“We called together the NRW Trail working group to ensure a coordinated effort. We are very pleased with the results and hope the Canberra public and visitors to our Nation’s Capital through the week will take advantage of this wonderful program.”
