Aboriginal Studies Press' Melbourne Dreaming: A Guide to Important Places of the Past and Present by Meyer Eidelson won the Historical Interpretation Award at the 2015 Victorian Community History Awards held at the Arts Centre in Melbourne recently.
Melbourne Dreaming is an authoritative travel guide to thirty-six local sites of both historical and contemporary Aboriginal significance. Designed for guided tours and self-guided walks ranging from 30mins to a whole day, the book provides key travel information, detailed maps, illustrations and stories of alternative social history.
An accompanying app is currently in development.
The Victorian Community History Award judges said the book was an attractive, comprehensive guide to significant Aboriginal sites in and around Melbourne with precise instructions on how to visit them.
“It is amply illustrated by excellent visual material with succinct discussion of each site, contextual overviews of traditional, contact and recent Aboriginal history always presented with both the collaboration of Aboriginal people and the underlying empathy of the author."
Meyer also won a commendation for his book Yalukit Willam: The River People of Port Phillip.
The Victorian Community History Awards are presented by Public Record Office Victoria in partnership with the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, and funded by the Victorian Government.
A major event of History Week, the annual Victorian Community History Awards recognise the work of individuals and organisations committed to telling stories of local history.
