The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) is proud to announce the Kimberley Land Council (KLC) as the co-convenor of the 2018 National Native Title Conference.
The Conference will be hosted by the Yawuru people on their traditional lands in Broome, Western Australia (WA), from Tuesday 5 to Thursday 7 June 2018.
AIATSIS CEO Craig Ritchie said it will be the first National Native Title Conference to be held in the far north of Western Australia.
“The conference remains one of the most significant national gatherings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It provides an important opportunity for our people to celebrate milestones and accomplishments, and address ongoing challenges in the native title sector,” Mr Ritchie said.
“We look forward to working with the KLC and Nyamba Buru Yawuru to deliver another successful event on such beautiful country.
“We would also like to acknowledge the support of the Broome Shire Council and Perth Convention Bureau to help us convene the Conference in Broome. We recognise that this is a significant undertaking and will require a collaborative joint effort.”
KLC Deputy Chief Executive Officer Tyronne Garstone said that the KLC welcomed the fact that the country’s biggest native title gathering should be held in the Kimberley in 2018.
“Next year we mark 40 years since the historic Noonkanbah dispute between Kimberley Aboriginal people, the WA Government and an international mining company, which led to the establishment of our Land Council to protect the enjoyment of our rights and interests in our traditional country,” Mr Garstone said.
“We look forward to sharing our strong sense of community spirit with conference delegates from around the country, and to showcase the diversity of native title groups and Aboriginal community organisations operating in the Kimberley.”
