Sponsored by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), the 2015 Stanner Award for an academic manuscript by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander author is now open for entries.
The biennial Stanner Award is open to all aspiring Indigenous authors of academic works, with the author of the winning submission receiving $5000 in prize money, an inscribed glass eel trap sculpture, and mentoring and editorial support to turn their manuscript into a publication.
Aboriginal Studies Press, the award-winning publishing arm of AIATSIS, will consider all entries for possible publication and will publish the winning manuscript.
AIATSIS Principal Mr Russell Taylor the Stanner Award provides an important avenue for Indigenous scholars to contribute to national debates.
“The eventual winner will join a list of exceptional titles from Aboriginal Studies Press and a growing list of titles where Indigenous scholars examine and write about their people and culture through their own eyes,” Mr Taylor said.
The award winning entry from 2013 ‘The politics of identity: Who counts as Aboriginal today’, by Dr Bronwyn Carlson used a range of historical and research literature as well as interviews, surveys and social networking sites to explore this complex and timely subject.
Established in 1985, the Stanner Award is a part of the Institute’s commitment to facilitating and publishing high-quality research in Australian Indigenous studies.
Named in honour of the late Emeritus Professor W.E.H. (Bill) Stanner, the Award recognises the eminent anthropologist’s life and work and his significant contribution to establishing the Institute.
