The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre (KALACC) have formalised their intent to support and learn from each other through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU was signed on Thursday 7th June at the National Native Title Conference in Broome.
Established in 1987, KALACC represents the interests of cultural bosses and Elders throughout the 200 communities, 30 language groups and 5 cultural blocks of the Kimberley region.
KALACC’s mission is to assist and promote the ceremonies, songs and dance of Kimberley Aboriginal people, to encourage and strengthen their social, cultural and legal values and to ensure their traditions have a place in Australian society.
The MoU serves to establish a framework for cooperation and collaboration on areas of mutual interest between AIATSIS and KALACC.
The first joint endeavour of the organisations is to digitise significant audio-visual material from KALACC. This material contains recordings of unique songs and stories from Elders across the Kimberly region, as well as recordings of languages and ceremonies.
