Dr Belinda Burbidge.
Dr Belinda Burbidge, Research Fellow at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies’ (AIATSIS) Native Title, Land and Water team, co-convened the 2015 pre-conference Assembly for Native Title Anthropologists held at the Australian Anthropology Conference in Melbourne recently.
First held in Perth in 2011, the now regular assembly provides a unique opportunity for research practitioners working in native title from around Australia to meet up and share information about recent developments in research, law and practice.
The assembly, held on Tuesday 1 December 2015, attracted over 35 attendees from different native title organisations and consultancies, sharing information from different regions across Australia.
This year the focus was on issues around ‘authorisation’ and ‘compensation’, and included the following features:
A presentation about the claim’s research process for the South West Native Title Settlement ILUAs by Sarah Bell and Aimee Lamatoa
A presentation about authorisation in the desert featuring two case studies from Western Australia by Heather Lynes, Central Desert Native Title Services (CDNTS)
A discussion on compensation in land rights, cultural heritage and native title led by Professor Jon Altman
Professional development, policy and research updates by Belinda Burbidge (AIATSIS), Julie Finlayson (CNTA) and Pam McGrath (NNTT)
Open discussion time for native title matters
The pre-conference Assembly was co-convened with Dr Julie Finlayson, Research Fellow from the Centre of Native Title Anthropology (CNTA) and Dr Pamela McGrath, Research Director at the National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT).
