AIATSIS commitment to Inclusion and Diversity recognised

Family Day 2014 was one successful outcome of the AIATSIS Towards Cultural Proficiency - a phased approach to building capability 2013 - 2015 Strategy.
The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) has been announced as a finalist in the 2014 Australian Human Resources Institute’s (AHRI) Inclusion and Diversity Awards, celebrating excellence in inclusive workplace practices across Australia.
The AIATSIS Towards Cultural Proficiency - a phased approach to building capability 2013 - 2015 Strategy has been nominated for the Cross Cultural Management award, which recognises excellence in cross cultural management initiatives.
AIATSIS Indigenous Cultural Proficiency Manager, Craig Leon said being shortlisted as a finalist for 2014 is quite an honour.
“Receiving this external recognition for AIATSIS’s commitment to cross cultural management is pleasing in itself. Regardless of whether we win or not, AIATSIS is proud of our achievement,” Mr Leon said.
“Our commitment to leading cross cultural management across the APS will continue.”
The AIATSIS Towards Cultural Proficiency - a phased approach to building capability 2013 - 2015 Strategy is an innovative whole-of-organisation approach to achieving cultural proficiency. Far broader than just Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness, the Strategy supports a three year phased approach to building cultural capability.
The benefits will be a suite of innovative and culturally inclusive competent practices to strengthen AIATSIS’s position as a world leader in raising awareness of Australian Indigenous cultures and histories.
AIATSIS has enjoyed considerable success since commencing the Strategy in March 2013. Most notable to date has been achieving Elevate status for our AIATSIS Reconciliation Action Plan 2014 – 2016.
Other successful outcomes achieved through the Strategy include:

The recruitment of 16 Indigenous Australians into the AIATSIS ‘Step Up’ career development program. Qualifications offered through the Step Up program range from a Certificate IV to Graduate and Post Graduate studies through both part-time and full-time studies
The AIATSIS Caucus (Indigenous staff network) enjoys formal recognition through the establishment of a Charter and elected Executive Committee with direct input to the AIATSIS Principal; and
A staff organised and run Family Day event. Staff volunteered their time on a Saturday to provide families of AIATSIS staff with guided tours of our offices and work functions, as well as a range of outdoor children activities with an Indigenous focus.
The winners of the AHRI Inclusion and Diversity Awards will be announced on 30 October 2014.
