My experience as an Indigenous PhD student at CQUniversity, Australia

Background: I began my Master’s degree in July 2014 and upgraded to PhD one year later with an intensive project investigating the Manipulation of poultry breeding stock microbiome for epigenetic improvement. I was introduced to key staff and some fellow students at the Office of Indigenous Engagement. When I began my Post graduate degree I was quickly made aware of services and support systems available through the Office of Indigenous Engagement, which I feel was very valuable and supported me to complete my degree. Having someone just to talk with in a culturally safe environment was imperative to giving me the drive to complete my academic goals, and still does to this day.

I was later invited via CQUniversity’s Office of Indigenous Engagement to attend the National Indigenous Research and Knowledge’s Network (NIRAKN) Symposium held at the University of Technology, Sydney. In this paper I will be discussing the opportunities provided to me through CQUniversity including the role of Professor Bronwyn Fredericks inn guiding me on my academic journey and provided a culturally safe environment within this institution.
