The nKPI data collection: background, findings, and progress

The Indigenous primary health care national Key Performance Indicators (nKPIs) data are collected from around 240 primary health care organisations that provide health care mainly to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. 

The 24 nKPIs focus on maternal and child health, preventative health and chronic disease management. Data collected on these indicators inform efforts to close the gap in health disadvantage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. The nKPIs support policy and service planning at the national and state/territory level by monitoring progress and indicating areas where improvements are evident and further improvements can be made, in particular at the service level. For this, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) provides feedback to organisations, every six months, to support their continuous quality improvement activities.

In this presentation, we discuss the background to the nKPI collection, how nKPI collection and reporting has progressed over time and highlight some key nKPI results from AIHW analyses. Data for different jurisdictions and remoteness areas is presented, and nKPI performance over time is described.
