25 years since the Mabo decision: the advancement of PBCs in the Torres Strait and the challenges we face
The panel discussion will involve all 4 chairs of the PBCs in discussing current topical issues that PBCs in the Torres Strait region are dealing with.
The panel session will be be facilitated by Ned David who is both the PBC Chair of Magani Lagaugal RNTBC and Chair of the GBK (the Torres Strait Sea and Land Council).
The panel will discuss the progress that PBCs in the Torres Strait region have made since the Mabo decision and highlight certain milestone achievements of their struggles.
The panel will explore the regional issues that the PBCs are dealing with when developing into self-sustaining autonomous bodies. This discussion will explore the barriers that PBCs face along with any practical shortcomings within the Native Title system. The panel will discuss potential solutions and through their own perspective make suggestions on what is required to overcome these barriers.
The panel is diverse in its representation. Panel members are from different nation groups and geographical locations within the Torres Strait. The representation and experience of the PBC Chairs is quite diverse and all bring the unique story of their experience to the group discussion.
