How we work together to share Nyangumarta and Karajarri country

The Nyangumarta/Karajarri joint native title determination recognises that the Nyangumarta and Karajarri people have shared rights and interests inside the determination area.

The Nyangumarta and Karajarri people have exclusive possession across a narrow strip of the intertidal zone along 80 Mile Beach and non-exclusive possession across the remainder of the native title claim area. In 2012, the Nyangumarta Karajarri Aboriginal Corporation was established. The corporation holds Native Title on trust for the Native Title holders. Some of the objectives of the corporation are:

To protect, preserve and advance the traditions, laws, languages, culture and customs of the Nyangumarta People and the Karajarri People.
To help build trust and friendship between the Nyangumarta People, the Karajarri People and other Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
To promote the economic, social and cultural aspirations and well-being of the Nyangumarta People and the Karajarri People.

The PBC governance model has been developed by the Nyangumarta and Karajarri people to make sure that their country is fairly and evenly shared between the two groups. They also have external parties that they have to engage with including the Anna Plains pastoral lease and the Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy ILUA.
