Trove: Powering Indigenous research for the 21st century

Trove is a place to discover, immerse oneself and engage with the many voices that make up our Australian community. Gathering collections from community, cultural and research organisations, it also hosts a growing corpus of content digitised in partnership with other organisations. With funding from the Australian Public Service Modernisation Fund, the National Library of Australia (NLA) is currently renewing and revitalising the Trove experience for everyone – with a particular focus on making it more accessible to Australia’s diverse community.

Significant digitised content relating to First Nations People is being added in close cooperation with Indigenous communities. The NLA’s commitment to strengthen collections applies across many formats delivered through Trove. This year Trove is also introducing a number of significant enhancements to support discovery and access to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander material and ensure the best experience in Trove for First Nations People. With the use of AustLang, the thesaurus of Australian languages developed by AIATSIS, visitors to Trove will be able to search from specific language groups. The NLA will be the first collection to include these Indigenous language markers in metadata. 

As well as highlighting Trove’s redevelopment, this session will also offer participants to learn about the ways Indigenous research is being undertaken by showcasing a number of research projects that have been undertaken using Trove.
