Report on the situation and status of Indigenous cultures and heritage

AIATSIS is currently developing a report on the situation and status of Indigenous cultures and heritage. The report aims to collect, analyse and interpret information on many facets of Indigenous cultures — such as language and connection to Country — and through this provide a national overview of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritage.

The report will be the first of its kind and serve as an important source of information to enable stronger government support for the maintenance and strengthening of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritage.

This project is a core component of fulfilling AIATSIS’ fifth legislative function: ‘to provide advice to the Commonwealth on the situation and status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage’.

The project builds on AIATSIS’ expertise in Indigenous culture and heritage and its active engagement in Indigenous policy and policymaking. Development on the framework for the report began in March 2019, with a workshop accompanying our first Culture and Policy Symposium. The report also builds on AIATSIS’ cross-sectoral, nation-wide partnerships and relationships.
