Core: Culturally responsive teaching is designed to develop teachers’ understanding of culturally responsive pedagogy and how to confidently embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures into the curriculum.

The course includes:
  • Five units of engaging, self-paced content.
  • A range of theory, real-world examples, and pedagogical applications.
  • Short videos, multiple-choice questions, and reflective activities.
Teachers will:
  • Develop their capacity to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through culturally responsive teaching.
  • Strengthen their ability to teach Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in a way that promotes reconciliation.

Overview of units

Unit 1: Confronting bias
Explores the impact of biases in education. Teachers learn how to identify and interrogate their own biases.

Unit 2: History of Indigenous education
Unpacks the history of educational policies and practices aimed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Unit 3: The power of language
Demonstrates how language may be used to empower students or undermine them. Teachers develop an understanding of deficit discourse and strengths-based language.

Unit 4: Selecting resources
Teachers use the AIATSIS Guide to evaluating and selecting resources as a framework to identify educational resources that could be used to promote cultural safety and cultural responsiveness.

Unit 5: Effective teaching
Applies teachers’ learning to developing a pedagogical practice that is effective for not only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, but all students. Teachers reflect on how to teach about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in a manner that promotes respect and reconciliation.
