Searching for your family's war service records
The following websites are the main sites to visit if you are interested in undertaking research on your family's Indigenous war service.
The Australian War Memorial – Nominal Roll, Roll of Honour
At the Australian War Memorial website you can search the Nominal Roll of those who served in wars pre-First World War and World War I, and the Roll of Honour of those who died while serving. The website contains the links to the Department of Veteran's Affairs website at which you can search the nominal rolls for the Second World War, Korean War, Vietnam War and the Gulf War.
You are able to search the website with the keyword "Indigenous" to find further information about Indigenous men and women's war service. This website also has a general Family History section.
National Archives of Australia - War Service Records
The National Archives of Australia holds war service records in the Australian Defence Force from 1901 onwards at:
From the Homepage of this website you can go to A-Z for Researchers and find a section on "Indigenous Australians". This website also has a general Family History section.
The National Archives of Australia also has a website titled Mapping Our Anzacs at http://mappingouranzacs.naa.gov.au/. On this site you can search not only by name but also by place of birth and/or enlistment. The site is interactive and you can also add your family's war records to the site.
