            the painting are two mosquito sting totems. These are flanked on

            either side by two symbols representing the sacred waterhole

            Mirramina (white circle) and the flood waters. On the right is a

            file snake. At the lower is seen one of the Wawaluk. Length

            the beginning there lived a spirit man or mokuy named

            Ganbulabula. He lived at a place called Datjala, which is near

            where the Eldo Tracking Station now is. He found Mana the Shark

            while hunting at Gurala River near Arnhem Land. The shark had

            come from Wurr-lula. He speared that shark with a barbed spear

            (batj), and the shark swam away to another place called

            Wulwulwuy, near Blue Mud Bay (for more infomation see original

            Painter Mataman (deceased Jan 1970). Moiety: dua. Mada:

            Riradjingu. This painting closely resembles one collected by

            Mounford in 1948 (see "the American-Australian Exped. to Arnhem

            Land" p272, pl C) The mysterious Baijini (Yirritja) were cooking

            trepang on the dua half of Aparina Island when Djunkao and his

            sister landed there. Djunkao (dua) asked the Baijini to

            immediately shift to their own part of the island as he objected

            to them using up the dua firewood. As a punishment Djukao took

            their paddles. The footprints were made by the Baijini as they

            hurriedly left the area. The cross hatching represents fire, and

            ashes used by the Baijini. Length 89cm; width 24cm

            are the termite mounds (black ones) Garrubuma. The figure with

            them is the woman Djinmerdua (? young girl). she walks around at

            this site and can make people become very weak. Probably painted

            1968/69. Jack Barrielanga lives in the bush and no longer paints.

            belongs in the Yirritjinga moiety. The two circular slopes and

            black lines within them are waterholes on the island upon which

            Milingimbi Mission is located. The big waterhole is

            "Mungatjowel", the small one is very close to Milingimbi itself.

            They were created in the dreaming era by the tunntling of the

            creator serpent "Goobiajir". The cross-hatched areas represent

            stone country where the serpent lives. The wavy lines at the

            site called Kopanga there is a place called Ulmarrk Ajirripa

            (literally 'Ulmarrk standing there'). The Ulmarrk ceremony came

            up through the river in this area of the dreaming. People had the

            first Ulmarrk ceremony at this site. The two large

            representations of sacred objects are shown on either side of the

            river. The artist is in the unfortunate positon of having swapped

            moeities in an attempt to correct previous marriage regulations

            False Piont). The thre barks 22403-22405 all tell the story of a

            big man in the dreaming era who was a notorious wife stealer. One

            day he was chased by some men into the sea. He picked up a stone

            over his head to throw at them but they speared him. The painting

            22404 tells this story. 22403 and 22405 emphasise the several

            organs of the wife stealer, 22405 treating them in site and 22403

            treating them in isolation. The man turned to stone at his death

            and is still seen lying in the waters off Inangandua in the form
