A.W. Howitt was an English born anthropologist, explorer and geologist. He
had a keen interest in Indigenous culture and published numerous works which
despite attracting some modern criticism, continue to be a valuable source
of information about the peoples of Victoria, New South Wales, South
Australia and Queensland.
His interests arose from his early expeditions. In 1861 he was chosen to
lead the search for the lost explorers Burke and Wills, which led to several
excursions into Central Australia and thus an exposure to Indigenous
culture. During his excursions he met Yandruwandha, Dieri and other
Indigenous groups that had not yet been in direct contact with Europeans.
Howitt later settled in Gippsland, where he made ethnographic recordings
of the Kurnai people.
His most notable works include ‘Kamilaroi and Kurnai’ (jointly published
in 1880 with L. Fison) and ‘The Native Tribes of South-East Australia’
(1904).
