Scope and Content Note
Date range: 1863-1917 (bulk), 1929, 1944-66
Extent: 54 cm (3 boxes)
The collection contains records relating to the Bethesda Mission
Station at Killalpaninna, its outstations at Kopperamanna and Etadunna, all in South
Australia, and to the Hermannsburg Mission in the Northern Territory. Included in
this collection are correspondence, school and other reports, hymns, songs and Bible
stories in Diyari, some miscellaneous papers and extracts on the Bethesda and Hermannsburg
Missions from Australische Christenbote and Kirchen und Missions-Zeitung fur die
evang. Lutherische Kirche Australiens.
Nearly all of Series 2, Correspondence, is in German and there are also
some records in German in other series.
The collection consists entirely of photocopies, originally made in the
1970s from records held at the Archives and Research Centre, Lutheran Church of Australia.
The photocopies were originally made on thermal photocopying paper so the quality of the
copies deteriorated over time. They were therefore re-copied in October and November
2002 onto archival quality paper. New copies of some of the records are being sought from
the Lutheran Archives owing to the quality of the original photocopies at this time.
The Library has determined the file order. Where available, file names
supplied with the photocopies have been retained.
For a complete listing of material about the Bethesda and Hermannsburg
Missions and the missionaries stationed there, that is held by the Institute, see the
Mura®
online catalogue.
The Archives and Research Centre, Lutheran Church of Australia, which
is located in Adelaide, holds 18 boxes and 20 bound volumes of the Bethesda Mission
records at SLA 307.100. The Mortlock Library of South Australia holds Letters from Rebecca
Maltilina, 1907-17 at D 6755 (L) and Rose Vogelsangs postcards from Bethesda Mission
Station at D 6767 (Misc).
Photocopies of the published works listed in Series 9 have been placed
in the Librarys book collection.

Background Note
The Evangelical Immanuel Lutheran Synod in Australia was
established in 1866. Starting in October 1896, Synod Missionaries J.F. Gossling and E.
Homann, Brother Johann Ernst Jacob and lay-helper Hermann Heinrich Vogelsang travelled
from Langmiel, South Australia, to Lake Killalpaninna, on Cooper's Creek, South Australia,
arriving in January 1867. They established a mission station there on the advice of Police
Trooper Samuel Gason and J.P. Buttfield, Sub-Protector of Aborigines. The mission was
abandoned after three months as the Aborigines became hostile, but was re-opened when the
police depot was moved from Lake Hope to Kopperamanna.
Once Bethesda Mission was firmly established at Lake Killalpaninna it
was extended to include outstations at Kopperamanna, on the shore of Lake Kopperamanna,
and at Etadunna, nearly 20 kilometres to the east of Bethesda.
The Mission grew over the next few years with more missionaries being
appointed, mail being delivered by the Marree to Birdsville mailman and a post office
opening at Kopperamanna. In 1879 a school, houses, store rooms and dormitories were built
and a church was opened in 1880
Johannes Reuther arrived at the Mission in 1888 and Carl Strehlow in
1892. They continued work on the translation of both the Old and the New Testament into
Diyari, work that was begun by Wilhelm Koch and completed by Reuther in 1896.
One of the largest Lutheran missions, Bethesda reached its peak during
the time Johannes Reuther and Carl Strehlow were stationed there. However, Bethesda was in
decline by the beginning of World War 1 and it closed in 1915.
