SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Date range: 1970-1977

Extent: .63 metres (4 boxes)

This collection consists of transcripts of interviews conducted in the early 1970s by Bruce Shaw with informants from the township of Kununurra in Western Australia. The interviews record information collected for socio-political research on Kununurra.

The typescript transcripts, some of which are bound, were prepared by Shaw between 1973 and 1976. In April 2005 the Library rehoused each item into individual folders but maintained Shaw’s original numbering.

In addition to this collection, the Library holds a number of other manuscript collections, published articles and books by Bruce Shaw. All audiovisual material compiled by Shaw was transferred to the Audiovisual Archives.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Bruce Shaw was born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1941 and studied social anthropology at the University of Western Australia in the 1960s. His acquaintanceship with several Indigenous Australians in 1970 kindled his interest in recording their memories and in 1973 began collecting life stories. For six years Shaw was a lecturer in social anthropology at the Darwin Community College (now the University of the Northern Territory).
