Past

BlackWords is a digital humanities resource for the researching and teaching of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander literatures and oratures.  Established by Aboriginal writers in 2006, it sets a benchmark for the management and incorporation of Indigenous cultural research projects in the humanities.

AIATSIS’ current BlackWords project, ‘Aboriginal Literatures, Stories, and Languages’, combines academic and community research to develop educational resources about Aboriginal stories, literatures, and languages.

Impact statement

The education resources developed by our BlackWords project are designed as formal teaching aids for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander literatures, Australian literature, and Australian studies in secondary schools.

The project also provides creative resources that relate to the survival of the languages in traditional and dynamic hybrid forms, and is informed by the critical correlation between the strength of Australian languages, and the pride and wellbeing of individuals and communities.

Blackwords news, events and project outputs are accessible through AustLit.
