Submission on the Draft Indigenous Education Action Plan 2010–14 Jun 2012

This submission was made in 2011 in response to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan 2010-2014 prepared by the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA).                     

AIATSIS submitted its concerns with regard to the following issues:

  1. The lack of emphasis of the ESL issue in English literacy and the fact that Indigenous students come from different language backgrounds (see below), including the fact that many Indigenous students come from a Language Background Other Than English (LBOTE); and
  2. The lack of emphasis on Indigenous languages and their place in improving Indigenous education outcomes, especially in the identified domains of 'engagement and connections' and 'literacy and numeracy'.
