Garagu Kanai is a Eetalaig woman from Moa, a Kaurareg woman from the inner Island Kaiwalagal region. On her maternal side Garagu is a Magaram Dauareb women from the Murray Islands and a Garrawa from the Gulf Country. Garagu performs multiple leadership roles in native title including Chair of the Mualgal (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation RTNTBC, the registered native title body corporate for Moa. Garagu is also a director of Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council and Malu Lamar (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation RNTBC. Garagu is a Mualgal representative on the steering committee for the Moa tenure resolution project and is involved in the conventions for Indigenous recognition in the Australian Constitution. Garagu is studying part time for a Bachelor of Laws degree through James Cook University in Townsville. She is also a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
