Marmingee Hand is a Ngurrara Traditional Owner from the Great Sandy Desert and lives in Fitzroy Crossing. She is the current Chairperson of the Yanunijarra Aboriginal Corporation that manages the Ngurrara Healthy Country Program. Marmingee has been working on native title and Caring for Country initiatives for over 30 years. She was instrumental in helping her people get exclusive native title of over 7.7 Million Hectares of the Great Sandy Desert and with the declaration of the Warlu Jilajaa Jumu Indigenous Protected Area in 2007. Marmingee’s background is in Indigenous education and she is the current Deputy Principal of the Fitzroy Crossing District High School. Her passion for the preservation of language and culture was influential in setting up the Ngurrara 2-Way learning project. She feels that this project is helping her people remain culturally strong, while gaining the skills to participate in a western wage economy.
